Abstract
Diapers might cause children to walk with broader, shorter steps, as a less mature peer. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of modern single-use diapers on early walking by comparing gait patterns without any diaper. Children were divided into two groups depending on the age and walking experience (12 to 18 months and 18 to 24 months; walking for less than or more than six months). They walked barefoot and unsupported on the force plate. Initially, each child walked without any diaper. Other sessions involved walking with any of the two different diaper brands (X and Y). Average step width, step length, left and right strides were measured for all sessions. The study involved 82 children. The gait patterns of children in two different age groups or in different walking experience were shown to be significantly different. There was not any significant difference between measurements of diapered walking and walking with only thin cotton underwear, in any group. The study showed that diapering showed no significant effect on early walking patterns of children aged between one and two years of age, when compared to walking without any diapers.
